Facebook Ads for Travel Agents: Understanding Meta’s Algorithm and Audience Targeting in 2025

Running Meta Ads can be one of the most powerful ways to grow your business, if you understand how to analyze what’s really happening behind the scenes.

In this guide, we’ll break down how to interpret your campaign data, train Meta’s algorithm properly, and make smarter budget decisions so you can scale your ads efficiently.

Why Meta Needs 50 Conversions Per Week

When you launch an ad campaign, Meta’s algorithm doesn’t fully understand who your perfect customer is yet. To fix that, it needs data, specifically, about 50 conversions per week for the event you’re optimizing for (such as webinar sign-ups, purchases, or form submissions).

Those 50 conversions act like a training dataset. Once Meta has enough, it starts showing your ads to people who are statistically more likely to take that same action again.

If you’re not hitting that number, which is common when you’re spending under $500/day, you can still succeed, but you need to be surgical with your strategy.

Understanding Audience Types

Meta gives you three primary ways to target people. Knowing how each works will determine how effectively you spend your ad budget.

1. Broad Audiences

This setting tells Meta: “Find my best customers across all users.” You give the algorithm your creative and conversion goal, and Meta does the rest. It’s great once your pixel is trained, but early on, it can burn through money fast without enough data.

2. Interest-Based Audiences

Here, you narrow down by interests and demographics, for example:

  • People who follow Abercrombie & Kent
  • Frequent travelers
  • High-income earners

This helps Meta get more precise, but the tradeoff is a smaller audience size.

3. Lookalike Audiences

This is where the real magic happens. You upload a list of your past leads or buyers, and Meta finds new users who share similar traits. Lookalikes usually deliver the lowest cost per lead and highest relevance, but since the audience is smaller, creatives must be refreshed frequently.

Why Clean Data Matters

Meta tracks dozens of user actions called events: page views, leads, purchases, adds to cart, and more.

When you don’t have enough conversions, Meta defaults to tracking weaker signals, like page views, and optimizes toward people who just visit pages, not those who actually buy or register.

This can “dirty” your pixel and send your ads in the wrong direction. To prevent that:

  • Turn off page view events during early testing phases
  • Focus your optimization on meaningful actions like registrations or purchases

Case Study: The Travel Agents Academy

To illustrate how this all works, let’s look at a real campaign we ran for The Travel Agents Academy, designed to attract travel advisors ready to grow their business.

Goal

Generate low-ticket sales ($18–$27) to identify financially motivated agents who are likely to invest further.

Setup

We ran three ad sets:

  • Broad targeting
  • Interest-based
  • Lookalike audience (from previous travel agent data)

Results

  • 2% = average
  • 3%+ = strong
  • Lookalike audience performed best but had the smallest budget allocation because of limited data.

Next Steps

  1. 1Turn off broad and interest sets.
  2. 2A/B test two offers, one focused on sales, the other on marketing.
  3. 3Scale the winning offer.
  4. 4Create custom and retargeting audiences once 100+ purchases are logged.

Retargeting and the 7-Hour Rule

Most leads need about seven hours of engagement before they’re ready to take action.

We use engagement-based retargeting to make this happen:

  • Retarget people who watched at least 3 seconds of your video
  • Show them new creatives or educational content
  • Reintroduce the offer with different hooks or proof-based angles

This keeps your brand top of mind and dramatically increases conversion rates over time.

Key Takeaways

  • Feed the algorithm: Meta needs data to optimize effectively, aim for 50 conversions per week.
  • Start narrow, then scale broad: Begin with lookalikes or interests, then expand once your pixel learns.
  • Clean data > more data: Don’t let weak signals pollute your pixel.
  • Test relentlessly: Offers, angles, and creatives all affect CTR and cost per lead.
  • Build your ecosystem: Use low-ticket offers to qualify leads and retarget them later with higher-value offers.
